Assistant Professor - Structural Engineering

The Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of sustainable structural systems. The appointment is expected to begin on January 1, 2021, or soon thereafter.

Candidates must have a PhD in civil engineering, or a related discipline by date of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates who have a background in structural engineering and demonstrate research excellence in ideally one or more of the following areas: wood and timber structures, hybrid steel or concrete - timber structures, relevant building and bridge code issues, structural mechanics, large-scale structural testing, advanced numerical modelling and related areas.  Applicants must indicate how their expertise would complement existing research and teaching in the Structural Engineering group and extend the impact of the department. The successful applicant must complement and strengthen the overall capacity for research and teaching of several current faculty members in the Department. It is preferred that candidates have an undergraduate degree in engineering and be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer. 

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive and externally funded research program. The candidate will also be involved in undergraduate and graduate teaching, research and departmental service. 

The successful candidate must demonstrate excellence in research as evidenced primarily by a record on published papers in top-ranked and field relevant journals, or a research pipeline that is at high international levels, the submitted research statement, participation in top conferences, presenting research at other prominent venues, as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.

Excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by the teaching dossier submitted with the application including a strong statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi and excellent teaching evaluations as well as strong endorsements from referees.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
