Our Science Technology Department assists the physics community users in bringing to reality their experiments by providing technical resources for the design, construction, and commissioning of their experiments. Within this department, our Detector Engineering and Construction group contributes heavily to the design, development, and construction of advanced detectors for very diverse applications

We have an immediate opening for an intermediate level Technician to join this group for a two year term and provide a wide variety of technical mechanical engineering services for our ARIEL and UCN projects. The services you provide will include procurement and manufacturing of parts, and assembly of both simple and complex components of scientific equipment and instruments.  Specific responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in the design of mechanical components and equipment
  • Installing and aligning new mechanical components
  • Assembling, operating, and maintaining assembly equipment such as Delvotec, G5 wire bonder, digital microscope system and other sensitive clean room equipment

You may also be required to successfully complete the TRIUMF in-house radiation safety training course and be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.

As our ideal candidate, you have a strong mechanical aptitude and good judgement in selecting the appropriate approach and application of basic mechanical engineering technology techniques.  You are also familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel, and have some experience with 3D mechanical modeling applications such as SolidWorks. Your other qualifications include:

  • A demonstrated ability to use machining equipment for detailed design, fabrication and assembly of parts based on conceptual designs
  • Basic knowledge in the production and assembly of sensitive electronic devices
  • A demonstrated ability to operate cut off saws, drill presses, and all power and hand tools
  • A diploma in mechanical engineering technology and at least 3 years of practical experience after graduate, or the equivalent combination of experience and education

While not required, the following would be considered a definite asset to your application: knowledge and experience with manufacturing processes, machine tools, CNC machining with MasterCam, PDM Works, and AutoCAD.

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada for duration of the two year contract.
