TRIUMF Applied Technology Group maintains and operates compact cyclotrons within the Radio Chemistry Annex (RCA) building. There are multiple electrical devices including high-voltage and high-current power supplies that are connected to the various sub-systems of these cyclotrons.
The ATG Electrical Engineer will be responsible for the development, design, installation, operation and maintenance of the electrical equipment and electrical distribution systems within the RCA building. This role also initiates, plans, and conducts development projects to improve the reliability and overall performance of the cyclotrons’ electrical systems, including but not limited to disciplines such as RF, ion-source, beamlines, injection lines, and main magnet.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for maintenance, upgrades, and repair services related to the cyclotron power supplies.
- Provide hands-on troubleshooting, installation, servicing, repairing and maintenance of cyclotrons power supplies, ranging from low voltage to 20kV and from a few mA to 500A
- Direct and oversee the work of outside contractors relating to electrical distribution systems, such as heavy-duty industrial UPS, emergency power transfer switches, MCCs, and electrical panels
- Prepare single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and equipment layouts
- Develop and implement preventative and periodic maintenance schedules for electrical devices
- Diagnose faults or analyses design problems, perform feasibility studies on electrical devices, and recommend equipment modification when required
- Prepare hazards list and implement hazard controls while working on electrical equipment
- Maintain technical data and records of equipment including testing and commissioning records
- Independently carry out a variety of standard and non-routine assignments to upgrade, improve, assemble, repair, and test electrical devices and components
- Assist ATG maintenance crew, as required, in corrective or preventative maintenance and repair of cyclotrons and their sub-systems
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
This is not a supervisor position, but the successful candidate may provide guidance and assistance to junior technicians and technologists.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Practical experience with electrical equipment
- Solid understanding of power supplies design including high voltage components
- Proficient with using electrical tools, such as oscilloscopes, high voltage probes, megger, signal generators, power analyzers
- Knowledgeable with electrical design and their practical applications, regional codes, and standards
- Experience developing technical documents, such as operation manuals, technical specifications, functional tests, budget and resource analysis, and design change notes
- Well capacitated to work efficiently as a team player or independently in order to achieve organizational objectives
- Project management skills and engineering experience, such as functional and safety specifications, conceptual design, detailed design, installation, operations and commissioning
- Working knowledge of process controls, PLCs, and instrumentation will be considered an asset
- Experience with load flow, short-circuit, and arc flash modelling software (EasyPower, ETAP, SKM, etc.) will be considered an asset
- Proficiency with other Computer Design Tools (AutoCAD, Altium Designer and Mathcad) will be considered an asset
NUCLEAR ENERGY WORKER:
The position requires the incumbent to be trained and designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker - training will be provided by TRIUMF.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
- University degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering
- A minimum of 4 years relevant experience.
- Licensed Professional Engineer or have the necessary qualifications to apply for licensing as a Professional Engineer with Engineers & Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).

$68,800.00 - $86,000.00
