Great Lakes Copper is Canada’s only manufacturer of copper tube, essential for so many life functions from drinking water to hospital gasses to heating, cooling, fuel supply and a vast range of other uses.  We are based out of London, Ontario and have enjoyed servicing our clients for over 65 years. We fulfill all manufacturing processes from casting, extrusion, seamless tube rolling (Pilgering), drawing, heat treatment and finishing under one roof and proudly boast the highest copper recycling rate in North America.

Purpose:   Our Project Engineers identify and implement improvements in all aspects of the manufacturing process, including supporting functions.  Improvements will likely be focused on efficiency and productivity, considering the human-machine and machine-machine interactions.

Primary Responsibilities: 

TEAM

  • Maintain and improve a safe working environment; promoting a ‘safety first’ mindset by modelling and reinforcing the same.
  • Embed, uphold and maintain the PSR process into all existing and new machinery within GLC’s control.
  • Promote collaboration with all other business functions.
  • Identify and implement improvements which make tasks safer, easier and less physically demanding.

CUSTOMER

  • Promote a ‘right first time’ mindset; identify, document and publish all requirements for process improvements/ projects and employ root cause corrective action (RCCA) techniques to continually improve internal customer (production) satisfaction.
  • Co-ordinate engineering activities to deliver solutions within agreed timeframes, using both internal and external resources.
  • Help identify and prioritize production improvements based on a spectrum of criteria considering all stakeholder requirements.
  • Report project progress to stakeholders; adjust actions in order to meet original scope and timescale commitments.

PROCESS

  • Improve processes and train employees in there correct use to avoid wasted effort.
  • Lead, design and implement improvements in production equipment and processes – both as an individual contributor and as a team
  • Champion change – build alignment in people with diverse interests to achieve common goals.
  • Professionally share observations, trends, recommendations and concerns regarding our people, processes and products with internal resources who can best assist.
  • Benchmark GLC with other companies and industries to ensure best practices are followed and shared within Mueller Industries, Inc.

COST

  • Identify and eliminate sources of waste in the business, in particular process efficiency and equipment performance
  • Gain improvement by bringing forward recommendations and ensuring change initiatives are trialed/ implemented, and supported.
  • Respond to various needs, and take on other duties as assigned.

You bring: 

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience leading engineering activities within a manufacturing environment
  • Completion of post-secondary education, ideally a related Engineering Degree (mechanical, electrical, integrated, industrial, manufacturing or process)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with ability to clearly relay and interpret information for various staff and contractors
  • Solid organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work in the immediate, short, medium and long term
  • Proficiency using MS Outlook, MS Office and AutoCAD/SolidWorks for business purposes
  • Proven problem-solving ability and ability to bring about improvement with and through others
  • Demonstrated success leading change
  • Innovation, adaptability, resourcefulness and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work flexibly, balancing internal and external commitments as necessary
  • Commitment to professional development
