Primary Objectives:

The Area Manager initiates, drives and participates in project related work activities aimed at improving Inspection Department effectiveness. Reporting to the Director, Inspections this is a hybrid role based at our Head Office, Toronto. Training of both technical and supervisory nature may be provided for this position depending on the requirements for the selected incumbent.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading a team of 4 to 8 technically qualified in-the-field Inspectors, reviewing their reports and ensuring accuracy, correctness and adherence to established procedures.
  • Providing guidance, mentorship, and training to team members via Continuous Conversations. Evaluating and monitoring team performance, ensuring they meet department goals and targets.
  • Handling employee issues and maintaining a positive work environment.
  • Providing feedback to field team members as required to improve and maintain Inspector reporting quality and efficiency.
  • As required, lead projects, aimed at improving department efficiencies and processes, ensuring that they stay on schedule
  • Conduct field inspections, assessments, and investigations as required. 

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Engineering with P.Eng designation (or eligibility to obtain).
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of field experience in industries such as manufacturing, power generation, mining, petroleum and/or pulp & paper.
  • Working knowledge of boilers and pressure vessels.
  • National Board Commission is required (or ability to obtain; training will be provided if necessary).
  • Certificate of Competence (COC) is required to perform jurisdictional inspections in Ontario (or the ability to obtain).
  • Commercial insurance background is an asset.
  • Advanced capabilities in computer application software, and knowledge of databases and analytics tools.
  • Intermediate to advanced level proficiency with Excel functions (complex formulas, macros, pivot tables) is a strong asset.
  • Energetic, innovative and confident with a demonstrated ability to earn the respect of technically qualified peers and subordinates.
  • Strong leadership and coaching skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment with a positive attitude.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, with proven consistent achievement of expected results and meet target deadlines.
  • Excellent and proven skills in communication, both written and oral.
  • Strong decision-making, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
