Detector Engineer/Physicist

TRIUMF is Canada's particle accelerator centre, and one of the world's leading laboratories for particle and nuclear physics and accelerator-based science. We are an international centre for discovery and innovation, advancing fundamental, applied, and interdisciplinary research for science, medicine, and business.

TRIUMF’s Detector Facility provides world class innovation, technology, and personnel for detector development and construction. This groups supports the development, design, and construction of state-of-the art detectors and associated electronics for condensed matter, nuclear and particle physics experiments, and medical applications.

The Detector Facility Group is accepting applications for a mid-level engineer or physicist to provide engineering, scientific and technical support for the design, prototyping, production, and commissioning of detectors of energetic particles to be used in the research programs at TRIUMF. Projects are varied, and include designing, building, and testing gas mixing and pressure control systems for low pressure detectors and offsite experiments, and integrated water cooling systems for detector electronics. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assessing experimental goals, and designing suitable detectors to meet those requirements
  • Constructing and commissioning various detector system for scientific experiments, and evaluating detector performance through simulations and bench tests
  • Assisting in the installation and commissioning of detector and gas and cooling systems for on-detector electronics
  • Creating technical description documents, and presenting at group meetings
  • May collaborate with experimental groups and contribute to publications of experiments, and may also write or collaborate on a detector publication

As our ideal candidate, you are flexible with demonstrated initiative, and detail oriented in all aspects of design, production, testing, and management activities. You have excellent communication and organizational skills, and you have:

  • A thorough understanding pf particle detector concepts and design, including physical processes important to the generation of signals inside the detector
  • Experience with bench test principles and associated apparatus
  • Training or extensive experience in the mechanical design of particle detectors
  • Physics and scientific knowledge and experience related to detectors is beneficial as part of the working relationship with physicists and other scientists
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member, work within changing requirements, and balance sometimes conflicting priorities
  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering or physics, combined with at least 5 years of relevant experience after graduation

While not required, a working knowledge of computer assisted design, with SolidWorks being preferred, would add to the effectiveness of the position. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will also be considered, and advanced degrees in engineering or physics would be considered a definite asset.
