Sustaining Engineer/Specialist

Reporting to the Manager, Sustaining, you will work with SMART’s manufacturing partners to resolve manufacturing issues, introduce and manage product changes, and monitor quality and yield.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Being the principle technical interface with SMART’s contract manufacturers (CM) and original design manufacturers (ODM) for products in your portfolio
  • Developing and supporting the production processes at these manufacturers, including qualification plans, volume ramp plans and product rework activities
  • Monitoring quality and performance gates to ensure products shipped meet specification and quality expectations
  • Analyzing and interpreting product field performance and information (including customer returns) and feeding this back into suppliers for continuous improvement of quality.
  • Analyzing production costs, and identifying cost reduction opportunities
  • Assist with the performance of supplier audits to qualify new suppliers and assessments for continuous improvement of current suppliers
  • Working with new product introduction (NPI) teams to help with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • Conducting studies on the reliability and performance of plant facilities
  • Evaluating, supporting and monitoring field reject rates and issues affecting product performance
  • Performing other duties as required

Education and work experience

  • Degree in engineering, preferably mechanical or electrical engineering streams
  • Professional Engineering designation an asset / required
  • 1-4 years of experience in a hardware product manufacturing environment (preferably mixed mechanical & electrical assembly)
  • Experience with external manufacturing models, e.g. contract manufacturers (CM) and original design manufacturers (ODM)
  • Familiarity with processes and methodologies such as ISO9001, Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, Design For Manufacturability (DFM), Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA), Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP)
  • Familiarity with supplier interactions such as: supplier quality audits, new product introduction, and corrective action processes
  • Familiarity with Agile engineering repository or equivalent, and ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems such as Oracle an asset
  • literate in design drawing interpretation for both mechanical and electrical designs (some familiarity with mechanical and electrical design tools (such as SolidWorks or Altium Designer 10) an asset)
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing statistics, such as process capability (Cpk), control charts, Design of Experiments
  • Ability to work across multiple products and priorities with a high degree of independence and confidence
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills in English
  • Ability to translate Mandarin to English would be an asset

  • Office-based role, fast-paced work environment
  • This position will require occasional conference calls outside of normal business hours
  • This position may require occasional work on Saturday or Sunday
  • This position may require 25% domestic or international travel.
