Carleton University invites applications, nominations and expressions of interest for the position of Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Design, with the appointment to be effective July 1, 2019. The Faculty of Engineering and Design is a unique combination of engineering and three schools of design (architecture, industrial design and information technology). It is a nationally and internationally recognized research-intensive Faculty offering an extensive range of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. The Faculty partners with government laboratories, industry leaders and other universities worldwide and is supported by state-of-the-art research facilities and internationally renowned faculty members. Its interdisciplinary programs offer co-operative education options and are organized within four engineering departments and three schools of design. The Faculty has 6,387 students, 175 faculty, 85 staff and an operating budget of $36 million dollars.

 

 

Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) and a member of Carleton’s senior administration, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design provides visionary strategic direction, academic planning leadership and administrative oversight to further the Faculty’s teaching and research initiatives. Committed to the success and development of students, faculty and staff, the new Dean will successfully manage the Faculty’s human, physical, financial and administrative resources. Working collaboratively with academic, industry, alumni and public sector partners, the new Dean will raise the impact, resources and reputation of the Faculty.  

 

The successful candidate will be an accomplished leader and academic with strong achievements in teaching, innovative research and external relations. With proven academic leadership experience and a record of building strong teams, the new Dean will possess an open and collegial style, a creative approach to problem solving, the ability to identify and generate new sources of funding, and outstanding management, communication and interpersonal skills. The new Dean will be able to promote excellence, equity, diversity and inclusion amongst all faculty, staff and students, while relating successfully to a range of internal and external partners.
