Mechatronics Engineer – Remote Handling

TRIUMF is Canada's particle accelerator centre, and one of the world's leading laboratories for particle and nuclear physics and accelerator-based science. We are an international centre for discovery and innovation, advancing fundamental, applied, and interdisciplinary research for science, medicine, and business.

TRIUMF’s 500 MeV cyclotron provides the primary proton beams that are used for the majority of TRIUMF's research programs, which consists of molecular and materials science, nuclear medicine, and nuclear physics and astrophysics within our ISAC facility. ISAC is a rare isotope beam (RIB) production and acceleration facility, producing some of the most intense RIBs of certain species.

We are currently recruiting a mid-level Mechatronics Engineer to provide engineering design, analysis, and support to our Remote Handling (RH) group, and to other groups or projects on an as-needed basis.  In this role, you will primarily be responsible for providing support for the Cyclotron RH maintenance equipment and control systems, and your work will encompass both maintenance and improvement of existing systems as well as innovative new electro-mechanical and robotics design projects.   Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • The ownership, maintenance and ongoing improvement of RH electro-mechanical and control systems, both hardware and software
  • Developing and documenting thorough, expert-level understanding of the electro-mechanical engineering of the Cyclotron RH equipment
  • Initiating and managing projects aimed at improving site-wide RH systems, and developing new and innovative concepts of electro-mechanical and mechanical RH systems
  • Establishing engineering requirements for components and systems, and developing design concepts
  • Providing oversight and coordination of fabrication, installation, commissioning and operation of RH equipment
  • Simulation and analysis (stress, thermal, fluids), and failure analysis and reliability engineering (fault tree, Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis)
  • Preparing documentation such as schematics, as-built drawings, design notes, presentations, and Engineering Change Orders
  • Participating in hands-on work for maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of equipment

You will also be required to successfully complete the TRIUMF in-house radiation safety training course and be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.

As our ideal candidate, you have a strong aptitude for working with and providing engineering guidance to a diverse team of individuals from multiple disciplines.  You have excellent written and oral communication skills, and you have:

  • A firm grasp of mechanical engineering techniques, including the fundamentals of mechanics of materials, dynamics, structural/stress analysis, fluids, heat transfer/thermal analysis, shock and vibration, numerical methods and finite element analysis
  • Familiarity with robotics, PLCs and controls hardware and software
  • Hands-on experience with electro-mechanical assembly and prototyping
  • An undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics engineering or engineering physics combined with at least 5 years of applicable experience, preferably in a research and development environment
  • Eligibility to register as a P.Eng. in British Columbia

While not required, experience with industrial rigging, cranes and overhead lifting equipment would be an asset.  A working knowledge of computer assisted design, with SolidWorks being preferred, would add to the effectiveness of the position.  Equivalent combinations of education and experience will also be considered.

TRIUMF offers a creative, diverse and inclusive team environment, located on the South campus of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC.

We offer a comprehensive benefits package, a competitive starting salary, and an excellent opportunity to enhance your career portfolio in a high profile national research facility.

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).

TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Your complete application package should be submitted by email to recruiting@triumf.ca and will include the following in one complete PDF file:
