The Standards and Equipment team is looking for a Substation Equipment Senior Engineer who will lead and be accountable for ENMAX Power Corporation (EPC) Substation equipment and materials.

The Engineer will demonstrate technical leadership and lead the procurement process for equipment and material by developing technical specifications, acceptance standards, performing technical evaluation for selection and approving commissioning tests reports of equipment.  

Major Responsibilities:

  • Ensure suitability of Substation equipment and material by verifying specifications are appropriate and commissioning is robust.

  • Develop, approve and maintain material standards, specifications, acceptance criteria, commissioning, and project support.

  • Work with supply chain to complete material and equipment procurement process including risk analysis, engineering analysis, contract development, contract award.

  • Develop, approve and maintain procedure for total cost of ownership (TCO) calculation and evaluation for assets.

  • Review long term equipment procurement contracts and develop procedure for continual renewal

  • Participate in dispute resolution and administration of warranty claims of major equipment.

  • Support development of equipment testing procedures, condition assessment guidelines, and asset health indices.

  • Work with engineering and field staff on material and equipment related safety concerns, equipment performance issues, and supply and substitution applications, providing direction where required

  • Support development of online condition monitoring strategy and parameters for equipment

  • Support material investigations arising from hazards, work methods, and requests for new materials from other departments

  • Support technical innovation and lead new technology initiatives

Education Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering

  • Registered as a Professional Engineer or PL (Eng.) with The Association of Professionals in Engineering and Geoscience in Alberta (APEGA).


Qualifications & Experience:

  • 10 years’ experience in the areas of asset management, equipment specification, procurement, and material/equipment application.

  • Strong background in the areas of asset management, equipment specification, procurement, and material/equipment application

  • Knowledge of equipment condition analysis tools, equipment failure root cause analyses and problem-solving skills

  • Knowledge of applicable IEEE/ANSI, CSA, AEUC, and IEC standards relating to electric utilities



  • Ability to develop and strengthen customer relationships; identify and effectively manage stakeholder relationships
  • Strong organizational, problem solving and implementation skills

  • Communicate technical and specialized information to both technical and non-technical audience

  • Independent and self-starting, able to set clear goals and execute

  • Analytical mind able to foresee problems in equipment/material suitability and fit

  • Ability to analyze actual Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and implement these results in procurement initiatives

Location:  This role will be part of our hybrid (home and office) work force with office workspace located at South Service Centre - 8820 - 52nd Street, Calgary, AB. You will work from home on Mondays and Fridays and in the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
