The Bridges and Structures division is seeking a skilled and motivated Leader that aspires to work on complex, urban city-shaping projects and initiatives. Reporting to the Manager of Bridges and Structures, you will lead our team of geotechnical engineers and technicians, who primarily perform project coordination and management and provide geotechnical subject matter expertise to a wide variety of interested parties. You will be the main champion to all City Business Units on geotechnical engineering matters. Primary duties include:
- Direct, mentor, and empower an integrated team that manages consultants and contractors and that monitors existing geotechnically challenging sites to ensure projects, reviews, and results are delivered on schedule, on budget, to developed success criteria, and in alignment with Division and Business Unit.
- Assist with procurement activities for geotechnical consultants and contractors.
- Coordinate, collaborate, communicate, and negotiate with a variety of Divisions, Business Units, Councilors, interest groups, and the public during your work; build strategic partnerships and collaborative environments that facilitate sound and timely decision-making.
- Utilize geotechnical engineering knowledge and judgment to make sound decisions and solve problems.
- Coordinate budgets for annual geotechnical program; authorize payment of invoices for various contracts.
- Steward The City’s Geotechnical Policies, Framework, and Guideline.
- Write and present to Council and respond to Council inquiries and requests.
- Complete select geotechnical engineering designs in-house from feasibility stage through to issued for construction stage – slopes, embankments, fills, retaining walls, slope stabilization, piles, etc., working with structural engineers on coordinated solutions (soil-structure interaction).
- Coordinate emergency response activities and work with The City’s Legal department as and when required for geotechnically challenging sites.
A degree in Civil Engineering or a related Engineering field, registration as a Professional Engineer in Canada, and current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or licensure by the first day of work.
At least 8 years of geotechnical experience post-graduation is required, along with at least 2 years of experience leading and supervising a team.
- Successful candidate will be The City’s Responsible Member for geotechnical engineering with APEGA.
- A graduate level degree in either geotechnical engineering or business would be considered an asset.
Working knowledge of the following is required:
Geotechnical design software for slopes, piles and retaining walls.
Current industry geotechnical codes, standards, guidelines, and practices.
- Experience with geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring devices, geotechnical site construction monitoring activities and contract administration roles, and reviewing geotechnical engineering reports for both Quality Control and Quality Assurance are required.
- Experience with asset management of geotechnical sites would be considered an asset.
- Knowledge of hydrogeologic and/or surface drainage processes would also be considered an asset.
- You have excellent communication and presentation skills, project management skills, political acumen, and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances in a high-pressure environment.
- Success in this position requires: strong analytical, business planning, and organizational effectiveness skills; an ability to lead and coordinate several strategic objectives; ability to balance technical requirements with non-technical competing priorities; and a desire to build a great city for everyone.
