Engineering Specialist, Soil Management

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs’ Environmental Management Branch offers this opportunity to lead the design and delivery of engineering solutions that contribute to a healthy environment, food safety, public health and welfare, and a robust agriculture and food industry.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will:

• provide engineering knowledge on proper soil management and its impact on soil health (e.g. erosion, compaction, reduction in organic matter and breakdown of aggregate structure)
• provide technical information, guidance and advice to ministry staff, industry and other stakeholders
• provide engineering expertise in the review of complex systems and technologies adaptable to agriculture and food sectors
• coordinate and manage demonstration projects and research highlighting innovations and new adaptable technologies
• contribute and consult on policies, strategies and innovative technologies
• develop engineering/technical components of regulations, standards, protocols and address issues
• in a geographically defined area, lead consultations and mediation on agricultural issues as legislated under the Farming and Food Production Protection Act (FFPPA), in a professional engineering manner
• provide engineering advice, technical leadership and guidance in the specialty area of soil management, fostering innovation to improve efficiency, performance, environmental sustainability, and food safety for the agriculture and food industry and the public

How do I qualify?

Mandatory requirements:

• You are a Professional Engineer, licensed with the Association of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
• You are able to travel to areas not serviced by public transportation.

Engineering and technical knowledge:

• You have thorough knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of engineering in one or more of the following disciplines: civil, structural, agriculture, environmental, bio-resource, mechanical or other related discipline.
• You have knowledge of farming practices, agricultural economics, mechanical systems and environmental/biological systems.
• You have knowledge of technology and information transfer methodologies.
• You have engineering experience related to soil management, agricultural drainage, and/or erosion and sediment control.
• You have knowledge of relevant policies, programs, legislation, regulations and standards.

Interpersonal and communication skills:

• You have consultation skills to provide technical guidance and advice.
• You have oral communication and presentation skills to deliver training materials, presentations as well as appear in court as an expert witness.
• You have written communication skills to prepare a variety of materials (e.g. articles, technical papers, training materials).
• You have conflict resolution skills to effectively mediate complaints and resolve contentious issues.
• You have relationship management skills to establish and maintain credible and effective working relationships with colleagues, industry representatives and the public.

Judgement and analytical skills:

• You have analytical skills to assess and apply research results to develop practical solutions to unique and complex issues.
• You have strong judgement to render decisions that can withstand legal scrutiny.
• You have analytical and judgement skills to appropriately apply engineering concepts when investigating and assessing design issues, recommending new applications and evaluating safety and environmental concerns.

Project leadership skills:

• You have group leadership skills to represent the ministry at various events and on various committees.
• You have knowledge of project management tools and methodologies.
• You have experience leading complex engineering studies and projects.

Salary Range: $79,260 - $105,476 per year
