Building on a history of inter-disciplinary engineering education, the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, at Queen’s University, invites applications for a Tenure-track teaching-focused faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor or a Tenured teaching-focused faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor, with a specialization in the fields of engineering design and practice, with a strong focus on engineering education.  The preferred start date for the appointment is July 1, 2023.


A degree in Engineering or Applied Science and a Master’s degree in related field to the position is required. A Ph.D. in Engineering or Applied Science or a related field to the position would be an asset. The successful candidate must be able to enhance engineering problem solving, education, design, and practice by incorporating diverse and multidisciplinary perspectives. Experience with industry and/or lived experiences working and interacting with Indigenous communities will be considered an asset. The successful candidate will preferably be able to, or demonstrate the ability and commitment to develop the capability to, incorporate Indigenous perspectives, philosophies, and Ways of Knowing into engineering design.


The main criteria for selection are:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in engineering design including demonstrated experience mentoring junior engineers and enthusiasm for the teaching of design;
  • Strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and an ongoing commitment to academic and pedagogical excellence. Teaching will make up majority of the appointment, approximately 70% of the position;
  • Evidence of successful industrial and/or academic contributions using diverse practices of knowledge, teaching, and design;
  • Provide evidence of an ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and student-centred environment and, if applicable, within Indigenous communities;
  • Exhibit strong potential for innovation and/or scholarly work in teaching and learning, or engineering education;
  • Professional engineering licensure in Canada, or the eligibility to obtain licensure, is a requirement. Note that all forms of engineering licensure in Canada are considered acceptable (e.g., P.Eng., temporary engineering license, provisional engineering license, etc.). Renewal of this appointment will be contingent on attaining P.Eng. licensure.

Given the inter-disciplinary engineering education and engineering design focus of this position, the appointment will be jointly held between one or more of the Departments of Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical and Materials Engineering, and Mining Engineering based on the experience and background of the identified successful candidate. The successful candidate will be expected to provide effective service contributions to the Faculty, University and broader community. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Prior to May 1, 2022, the University required all students, faculty, staff, and visitors (including contractors) to declare their COVID-19 vaccination status and provide proof that they were fully vaccinated or had an approved accommodation to engage in in-person University activities. These requirements were suspended effective May 1, 2022, but the University may reinstate them at any point.
