Job Description:

The Department of Biosystems Engineering at the University of Manitoba invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Sustainability Engineering. This position represents an expansion of our department made possible by the recent gift from the Price family. Start date will be July 1, 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.  

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate is expected to: 1) develop an innovative, externally-funded research program in the area of sustainability engineering (examples include, but are not limited to, reuse or recycling of waste in agricultural production or food processing; production of biofuels and/or bioproducts, biomanufacturing, or other topics that can be described as ‘circular’ biosystems) that is complementary to and synergistic with research expertise already present within the department; 2) contribute to the training of graduate students and other research personnel; 3) collaborate with other academics in the department and faculty, and the broader university community where common interests or synergies may exist; 4) teach existing undergraduate and/or graduate courses in the Biosystems Engineering program, and potentially develop new courses in your area of expertise; 5) participate in the department’s committee responsibilities within the University of Manitoba community; and 6) collaborate with relevant stakeholders (industry, producer groups and government) in Manitoba and the broader community. 

 

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must: 1) hold an undergraduate engineering degree (any engineering discipline is considered acceptable), 2) be registered or be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba; 3) hold a PhD (any engineering discipline is considered acceptable) at the time of appointment; and 4) have demonstrated research experience in an area that aligns with the goals of sustainability engineering. Teaching and graduate student supervision experience in a university environment is desirable, as is evidence of effective collaboration in a team environment. 

 

Additional Information:

Administratively, the Department of Biosystems Engineering resides in the Faculty of Agricultural & Food Sciences, but delivers an engineering program that is accredited and administered through the Price Faculty of Engineering. Thus, there are strong connections and responsibilities to both faculties. The Department has 13 tenured or tenure-track professors, 3 full-time instructors, and 7.2 support staff (3.2 administrative & 4 technical). Undergraduate enrolment in the Biosystems Engineering program is approximately 150 students, with an additional 50-60 graduate students in Master’s or PhD programs.  The undergraduate teaching responsibilities of the department include courses for the accredited B.Sc. in Biosystems Engineering and service courses for the degree and diploma programs in Agricultural & Food Sciences. The Department of Biosystems Engineering is home to the Sustainability-in-Action Facility devoted to experiential learning and demonstration opportunities that relate to sustainability (https://umanitoba.ca/engineering/biosystems).
