Job Description:

The Department of Biosystems Engineering at the University of Manitoba invites applications for a full-time probationary Instructor position at the rank of Instructor II or Senior Instructor with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2022. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate is expected to: 1) provide leadership to the teaching and administration of the first-year engineering design course that the Department of Biosystems Engineering delivers as part of the Preliminary Engineering program in the Price Faculty of Engineering (i.e., ENG 1430); 2) teach undergraduate courses in the Biosystems Engineering program, with a particular emphasis on the departmental design courses (i.e., BIOE 2900, BIOE 3900, BIOE 4900 or BIOE 4950); 3) collaborate with other academics in the department and Price Faculty of Engineering in the assessment of graduate attributes to support the on-going accreditation requirements of the University of Manitoba’s engineering programs; 4) participate in recruitment events and activities planned by either the department or the Price Faculty of Engineering; and 5) participate in the department’s committee responsibilities within the University of Manitoba community.  

 

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must: 1) hold an undergraduate engineering degree; 2) be registered or be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba; 3) hold at least one post-graduate degree (e.g., M.Sc., Ph.D.) in a related discipline (a Ph.D. is required for appointment to the rank of Senior Instructor); 4) have demonstrated teaching experience at a post-secondary institution, preferably with experience in teaching engineering design; and 5) possess the necessary personal attributes to collaborate effectively in a team environment.  

 

Additional Information:

Administratively, the Department of Biosystems Engineering resides in the Faculty of Agricultural & Food Sciences but delivers an undergraduate engineering program whose accreditation and administration is through the Price Faculty of Engineering. Thus, there are strong connections and responsibilities to both faculties. There are currently 13 tenured or tenure-track professors, three full-time instructors, and the equivalent of 6.7 support staff (2.7 administrative & 4 technical). Undergraduate enrolment in the Biosystems Engineering program is approximately 150 students, with an additional 50-60 graduate students in the Masters or Ph.D. programs.  The undergraduate teaching responsibilities of the department include courses for the accredited B.Sc. in Biosystems Engineering and service courses for the degree and diploma programs in Agricultural & Food Sciences.
