Target Production and Operation Engineer

TRIUMF is Canada's particle accelerator centre, and one of the world's leading laboratories for particle and nuclear physics and accelerator-based science. We are an international centre for discovery and innovation, advancing fundamental, applied, and interdisciplinary research for science, medicine, and business.

Our 500 MeV cyclotron provides the proton driver beams for the majority of TRIUMF's current on-site research programs, which include molecular and materials science and nuclear medicine, physics and astrophysics. There are two ISOL (Isotope Separator On-Line) facilities on-site. The ISAC facility has been producing and accelerating radioactive ion beams with the highest power driver beam in the world since 1999. The Advanced Rare IsotopE Laboratory (ARIEL) is currently under development and will expand TRIUMF's (and Canada's) capabilities to produce and study radioactive isotopes for cutting edge research. The Targets & Ion Sources (TIS) department encompasses a broad cross-section of the systems required for radioactive ion beam production: from target vessel design and development of target material studies, to ion source R&D that spans from transfer lines or arc discharge ion sources, to laser spectroscopy and laser-atom interaction regions.

We are currently accepting applications for a mid-level Engineer who will lead and coordinate maintenance and engineering projects for the Target Production & Operation group, and to other groups or projects on an as-needed basis.  In this role you will primarily provide support for ISAC, specifically the Target Station, Target Module, and Hot Cell infrastructure.  Your work will encompass both maintenance and improvement of existing systems, as well as new design projects.  Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning and executing infrastructure improvements projects in the ISAC Target Hall facility
  • Analyzing maintenance needs, developing maintenance plans, and coordinating and executing corrective and preventative maintenance
  • Leading maintenance and process optimization reviews and providing recommendations to improve reliability and efficiency
  • Performing failure analysis and reliability engineering, such as fault tree and Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis
  • Establishing engineering requirements for components and systems, and creating and developing design concepts
  • Implementing and supervising fabrication, installation, commissioning and operation of systems components
  • Creating documentation such as design notes, engineering notes, presentations, change orders and design reviews
  • Participating in hands-on work for the maintenance and repair of equipment

You will also be required to successfully complete the TRIUMF in-house radiation safety training course and be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.

As our ideal candidate, you have a strong aptitude for working with and providing engineering guidance to a diverse team of multiple disciplines.  You have excellent written and oral communication skills, and you have:

  • Skills and experience in reliability engineering, maintenance optimization, asset management, and failure analysis tools and methods (FMEA, FT, RCA/TapRoot)
  • Experience in data collection and analysis, and knowledge of system engineering
  • Experience in troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems, and a good understanding of and experience with industrial safety
  • Strong project management, planning and organizational skills
  • BSc degree in mechanical, industrial, or nuclear engineering or engineering physics combined with at least 5 years of relevant experience beyond graduation

While not required, knowledge of vacuum systems, experience with materials in high radiation fields, cooling systems and high-voltage are considered a definite asset.  Equivalent combinations of education and experience will also be considered.

TRIUMF offers a creative, diverse and inclusive team environment, located on the South campus of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC.

We offer a comprehensive benefits package, a competitive starting salary, and an excellent opportunity to enhance your career portfolio in a high profile national research facility.

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).

TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Your complete application package should be submitted by email to recruiting@triumf.ca and will include the following in one complete PDF file:
