Assistant Professor, Engineering

Job Summary:

The Faculty of Applied & Technical Studies invites applications for an Assistant Professor, Engineering.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach a variety of courses in Engineering, Engineering Physics, or Physics courses from 1st year to 4th year.

The Physics Department at UFV currently offers Physics Honours, Major, and Minor programs within the BSc. The department also offers a 1st year engineering transfer program and a diploma program in Engineering Physics (specialising in Mechatronics), as well as a few service courses (such as algebra-based physics, and astronomy) to other program students.

We seek applicants who share our passion for, and commitment to, excellence in undergraduate teaching in a student-centered environment; who are able to integrate their scholarship into their teaching; and who are experienced in the delivery of high-quality service in communities and/or industries of practice, particularly in the Physics and/or Engineering disciplines. The candidate must be able to interact effectively with other areas, programs, departments, and external partners, such as Math & Stats, Natural Sciences, Computing Science, the Technology departments, and the skilled Trades.

As a teaching-oriented institution and department, we are seeking a collegial, energetic and innovative individual who has successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level and who communicates effectively with students both in and out of the classroom; can instruct across a range of undergraduate courses offered by the department; and can contribute to the development and renewal of the curriculum in the Engineering Transfer program and/or Engineering Physics diploma (specializing in Mechatronics).  An ability to teach across traditional disciplinary boundaries and to contribute Indigenous perspectives to the curriculum and to the department would be an asset. Experience and interest in developing innovative and effective learning strategies including problem-based learning methods are highly desirable.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to advancing the state of professional practice through inquiry and scholarship.  

The successful applicant will be expected to actively participate in departmental activities, service, events, and initiatives.  A commitment to an ongoing program of professional development is required.

Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree (PhD preferred) in engineering, or a closely related field, from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Registered P.Eng or pending P.Eng.
  • An extensive knowledge of engineering and/or physics, with the experience in properly communicating that knowledge to students.
  • Minimum 2 years teaching experience at the undergraduate level with recent evidence of teaching excellence.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and service skills.
  • The potential for scholarly activity.
