Assistant Professor - Concrete Materials

The Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering at the University of Toronto invites applications for a tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of concrete materials. The anticipated start date of the appointment is September 1, 2021.

Candidates must have a PhD in civil engineering, or a related discipline by date of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates who have a background in material characterization, testing, durability, analysis and/or modelling and demonstrate research excellence in ideally one or more of these areas:  advanced concrete technologies; new, low CO2 cement-based materials; cement-based composites. Candidates are expected to show evidence of application in the area of infrastructure.

Applicants must indicate how their expertise would complement existing research and teaching in the Concrete Materials group and extend the impact of the Department. The successful applicant must complement and strengthen the overall capacity for research and teaching of several current faculty members in the Department. It is preferred that candidates have an undergraduate degree in engineering and be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer. 

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive and externally funded research program. The candidate will also be involved in undergraduate and graduate teaching, research and departmental service. 

The successful candidate must demonstrate excellence in research as evidenced primarily by a record of published papers in top-ranked and field relevant journals, or a research pipeline that is at high international levels, the submitted research statement, participation in top conferences, presenting research at other prominent venues, strong letters of reference from referees of high standing, and other documents submitted for review. 

Excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by the teaching dossier to include a strong statement of teaching philosophy, excellent teaching evaluations, sample syllabi and demonstrated superior performance in other teaching related activities, including performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, or experience leading successful workshops or seminars, as well as strong endorsements from referees.
