General Manager, Engineering & Utilities

As a member of the Regional District’s senior management team the General Manager, Engineering & Utilities (GM) provides input into major initiatives while planning, coordinating and overseeing the entire operations of the Department.  The GM provides advice and guidance to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Board, and its Committees and provides policy direction for the Regional District’s water, solid waste, wastewater, and infrastructure capital project functions.

In addition, the GM supports complex decision making on a day-to-day basis; works collaboratively and with transparency in the community to ensure projects and services are managed successfully; and is able to consider the regional and provincial context in which the Regional District operates. Recognizing the Department provides fundamental services such as project management, development engineering of water, wastewater, waste, recycling, and facilities asset management for departmental assets, the GM must work with a vast array of diverse constituents and represent the Regional District as a spokesperson in this regard.

The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) provides regional governance and services throughout Vancouver Island's beautiful central east coast. Communities within the region include the municipalities of Nanaimo, Lantzville, Parksville, and Qualicum Beach, as well as seven unincorporated Electoral Areas. Established in 1967, the RDN is British Columbia's fifth most populous Regional District of 28 throughout the province and home to more than 155,000 people.

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record of success in a senior engineering leadership role within a progressive municipality, regional district or complex public-sector organization. This individual is a contemporary leader, well-versed in effecting change to improve operations and service delivery. An engineer by training with a customer service focus, the GM has experience supporting a broader mandate by providing insightful strategic input into long term planning. Entrepreneurial, visionary, and inclusive, the top candidate will have led large, unionized teams and worked collaboratively with other functional areas across the organization to meet common goals and objectives.
