Associate Professor - Aerospace Engineering (Propulsion)

The University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS) is seeking applications for a tenure stream position at the rank of Associate Professor in aerospace engineering. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2018, or soon thereafter.

We are interested in applicants whose primary area of research is related to aircraft gas turbine propulsion (e.g. aerothermodynamics of turbomachinery, air breathing propulsion systems, heat transfer and fluid mechanics of gas turbine engines), especially research related to overall propulsion efficiency improvement and emissions reduction.

 

Applicants must have earned a PhD in aerospace or a related field, typically from an aerospace or mechanical engineering department. They must also have a strong commitment to both teaching and research. Our new Advanced Combustion Energy Research facility, which is one of the most advanced optically accessible high-pressure combustion facilities worldwide, is about to be completed with capabilities of 25 atm pressure and 1 kg/s flow rate of air at 800 K. The successful applicant is expected to be one of the primary users of this facility.  Further, the successful applicant will have an established reputation in research associated with aircraft gas turbine propulsion, will be expected to lead and maintain an independent, externally funded research program of international calibre, supervise graduate students, teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and engage in university service activities. The selection will be based primarily on the applicant’s excellence in research and teaching. Excellence in research is evidenced by sustained contributions and publications considered of international quality, the submitted statement of research interests, objectives and accomplishments, strong letters of reference from referees of high standing, and other documents submitted for review. Individuals that have previously published in the top journals of international standing are preferred. Participation in top conferences, presenting research at other highly ranked schools and other noteworthy activities related to aircraft gas turbine propulsion that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline are assets. Additionally, candidates must possess the demonstrated capacity to teach in our undergraduate and graduate programs. Evidence of excellence in teaching must be demonstrated in the teaching statement, the teaching dossier, teaching evaluations submitted as part of the application, as well as awards and accolades, and strong letters of reference.  Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
