Reporting to the Associate Director, Undergraduate, you will work directly with faculty to develop and deliver undergraduate Engineering laboratory experiments, along with managing undergraduate laboratories within the School of Engineering, and acting as a resource for faculty, teaching assistants, researchers and upper-year students who come to you for engineering advice or support.

More specifically, as a Senior Computer Engineering Laboratory Coordinator, you will support the following courses: Digital Systems Design Using Description Languages, Embedded Reconfigurable Computing Systems, Computer Organization and Design, Analog Integrated Circuits, Large-scale Software Architecture Engineering, Embedded System Design, Advanced Computer Architecture, VLSI Digital Design, and Engineering Design IV.

As a valuable resource for instructors, researchers and students, you will develop laboratory experiments – from concept to delivery – and provide expert engineering guidance to students and researchers working in your area of expertise, including the development, design, building and maintenance of equipment, as required. This position has a pedagogical component at its core, which means that you will be responsible for the design and/or re-design of the instructional material and for teaching theory of the material, especially with upper-year classes, to introduce or enhance the experiential learning component.

Your duties as a Senior Computer Engineering Laboratory Coordinator will also include:

• Supervising and training Graduate Teaching Assistants
• Instructing and assisting students with the collection and analysis of experimental data
• Building, maintaining, and calibrating laboratory equipment while ensuring that all activities are conducted in a safe manner
• Assessing and grading student work
• Participating in various SOE, College or University committees and activities.

REQUIREMENTS

To assume the role of Senior Computer Engineering Laboratory Coordinator, involving considerable teaching and mentorship, you must be highly organized and an excellent communicator with:

• A bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering or a related engineering field.
• Either a Professional Engineers Licence or eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario at the time of hiring, or equivalent engineering experience in the Computer Engineering field.
• Some prior teaching or training experience (an asset).
• A solid foundation in laboratory operations and experience with research methodologies and techniques (beneficial).
• Strong knowledge of/skill in:
  • Preparation of laboratory software and operating systems, including MATLAB, Cadence, Xilinx tools, SimpleScalar, and Linux system
  • Design of analog and digital circuits.
  • Working knowledge of/skill in:
    • FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) using VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Descriptive Language) in Embedded Systems
    • Embedded software design for microcontrollers (especially ARM) with C, C++, and assembly
    • Logic analyzers.

Familiarity with the application/use of the following is valuable:

• FPGA development boards and various microcontroller systems
• Electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and signal generators
  • Wireless and radio equipment.
