Job Description

Job Introduction
This position is responsible for developing innovative components and modules from the initial concept phase through the complete development process. This includes: design engineering, validation, prototyping, testing, and evaluation of the proposed production capable process and business case. Further, this role is required to maintain the innovation project schedule by monitoring project progress, co-coordinates activities, calculating time requirements, sequencing project elements and resolving problems. The successful candidate must be fluent in German.


Major Responsibilities

  • Responsible for developing innovative components and modules from the initial concept phase through the complete development process including: design engineering, validation, prototyping, testing, and evaluation of the proposed production capable process and business case
  • Design and conduct research programs; applying theory and principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, and materials
  • Part proposal drawing: starting from rough design concepts up to detail/final drawings, responsible for all drawing information including: tolerance/fits, GD&T specifications, dimensional stacks and surface finishes
  • Maintains innovation project schedule by monitoring project progress, coordinates activities, calculating time requirements, sequencing project elements and resolving problems
  • Specifies requests and coordinates all sub-contracted work (i.e.FEAs, Product Validation and Testing, Prototype parts manufacturing, CAD drawing file conversion) and assures timely completion
  • Undertakes and records detailed tolerance stacks necessary to support the design of robust and reliable products
  • Supports the Testing & Validation department by specifying test requirement and ensuring tests are completed to specification
  • Creates DFMEA documents
  • Attends meetings with customers, with respect to design/launch reviews
  • Contacts sub-contractors and Tier II vendors to coordinate overall design of components and assemblies
  • Prepares reports when requested
  • Ensures all meetings have minutes prepared, circulated and filed accordingly
  • Maintains proper filing systems to ensure all information, (electronic or hard copy), is properly stored and easily retrieved
  • Provides Engineering support to other departments within the company as directed by the Innovation Manager
  • Initiates plans and ideas for cost reduction and/or quality improvement measures
  • Responsible for all relevant drawings and parts list
  • Responsible for parts tagging and storage in appropriate location
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by reviewing professional publications and establishing personal networks
  • Contributes to team effort by providing innovative ideas for products and processes and by sharing new information with others team members
  • Maintains and updates CAD parts and files library
  • Responsible for working in compliance with the provisions of the Health and Safety Act and the regulations
  • Responsible for attending all mandatory health and safety training and meetings
  • Undertake other duties and responsibilities within the Innovation Centre as directed by the Innovation Manager


Knowledge and Education

  • Master of Science or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
  • Product design & development experience required
  • Ability to design 3D CAD models in Wire Frame, Surfaces & Solids, as well as, 2D detailed engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge of ANSI, SAE, QS-9000 and other industry/customer related standards
  • Knowledge of GD&T, Design for Manufacturing, Failure Mode Effect Analysis (DFMEA/PFMEA), Dimensional Stack Analysis
  • Knowledge of Manufacturing Process & Assembly methods
  • Knowledge of various materials used in automotive products, heat treatment and surface finishing
  • Competent at completing tolerance stacks for complex components, assemblies and systems
  • Blue Print reading, advanced measuring techniques, computer literate
  • Understanding of design inputs and outputs for CAE, particularly FEA and CFD
  • Knowledge of techniques and processes used to produce prototype components
  • Awareness of concurrent and simultaneous engineering techniques with the ability to work as part of a project team to achieve results often with short or compressed timing


Work Experience

  • Program specific innovation experience required


Skills and Competencies

  • Proficient with 3D CAD solid modeling (CATIA, UG or SolidWorks)
  • Proficient in German, both verbal and written
  • Other languages are an asset


Work Environment

  • The majority of the job is performed in a production / manufacturing environment with some risk and harmful elements
  • Overnight travel 10-25% of the time
