Do you have a desire to make a significant contribution to ensuring Albertans have a fair, safe and healthy place in which to work? Our Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) team works with Alberta employers, worker groups and associations to educate, and enforce the OHS Act Regulation and Code.

 

As a Professional Engineer having an authority and the duties of an Officer under the OHS Act in the OHS Mining Unit, you will report to the Director of Inspection for Mines and will be responsible for providing advice and information on issues such as regulatory and technical standards, and worker health and safety in mines. These positions require an ability to work effectively in a team setting and independently in the field conducting site inspections and investigation, enforcing compliance to legislation and dealing with issues related to mining certifications, labour mobility and mining standards. These positions will be responsible for technical reviews and to evaluate the proposed deviations to OHS legislation for approvals, acceptances and exemptions to OHS legislation.

 

To be successful in these roles, you will require well-developed verbal and written communication, decision making, and strong interpersonal skills in order to achieve positive outcomes. Qualifications: 

Mining Engineer

University graduation in Mining Engineering with at least 5 years of demonstrated experience in surface mines/quarries and underground coal mines, including evidence of practical supervisory experience in mine engineering and operations in a mining environment, is required. You must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in Alberta or eligible for membership as a P.Eng. in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).

 

Assets

- Related experience in an operating underground coal mine

- Effective problem management skills and proven personal interactive capabilities

- Mediation and facilitation experience and related accreditations

 

Mechanical Engineer

University graduation in Mechanical Engineering plus at least 5 years of demonstrated experience in industrial, equipment manufacturing and automation, including evidence of practical supervisory experience in engineering and operations in a petrochemical and mining environment, is required. You must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in Alberta or eligible for membership as a P.Eng. in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).

 

Assets

- Demonstrated experience in CSA and referenced standards related to equipment certification, automation and controls

- Effective problem management skills and proven personal interactive capabilities.

- Mediation and facilitation experience and related accreditations would be assets.

 

Approximately 2/3 of the mining activity within Alberta occurs in the Northern part of the province. Extensive and extended travel to Fort McMurray, Hinton and Grande Cache is involved. Candidates must also be able to work evenings and weekends as required.

 

The Mining Unit covers all types of Mining operations that includes Oil Sands, Coal Mining, Limestone and precious stone quarries, Sand and Gravel, Silica & Salt mines, and SAGD operations. Work performed often involves periods of strenuous physical activity (e.g. walking, climbing, crawling, heavy lifting, bending, kneeling) and potential exposure to different environmental conditions.

 

A valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license is required; use of your personal vehicle with reimbursement may be required. Final candidates will be asked to provide a Driver's Abstract and undergo a criminal record check.

 

The successful candidate must successfully complete the Peace officer training program and be able to be designated as a Peace Officer by the Solicitor General.

 

Candidates with less education or experience may be considered for current or future vacancies at other and/or or equal or lesser classifications across the Government of Alberta.
