Instructor – Technical Communication (Job Opening ID #25844)
This position provides the rare opportunity to pursue a career at the School of Engineering based on excellence in teaching and educational leadership at the university level, with engagement in innovative curriculum design and pedagogy in a collaborative teaching and learning community. The successful candidate will teach technical communication courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
While the successful candidate’s academic appointment will be in the School of Engineering to teach communications courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. They will also dedicate a portion of their workload teaching within the Vantage College program, an enriched first-year program for international students (http://vantagecollege.ubc.ca). UBC Vantage College offers a first-year curriculum in a cohort-learning program to academically strong international students whose English language proficiency does not yet meet the English language requirements for direct admission into UBC. Students take courses in Arts, Science, Engineering, or Management before transferring into second year in their degree program. The primary goals of the Vantage College curriculum are: (1) to encourage students’ cultural, linguistic, and academic engagement in disciplinary communities and (2) to maximize students’ successful transition to year two in the Faculties of Applied Science, Arts, Management, or Science. Embedded language instruction and English for Academic Purposes courses support students’ learning in all Vantage One programs. Instructors in Vantage College work collaboratively with peers from departments across faculties to develop, implement, and share innovative teaching practices and curricula. Persons hired in this positons would be required to deliver courses each summer.
The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. (ABD considered) in English, Rhetoric, Communication, or related discipline, post-secondary experience teaching composition and technical communication, and a proven record of excellence in teaching. Candidates will be expected to collaborate with other programs and departments and be highly engaged in curriculum development, course design, pedagogical innovation, and other teaching and learning initiatives. Applicants must have demonstrated an interest in achieving excellence in teaching and learning, in educational leadership, and in providing service to the University and community. Experience in teaching international students is highly desirable.
The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an excellent record of teaching, educational leadership, and service. As this is a tenure-track position, the successful candidate will be reviewed for reappointment, tenure, and promotion in subsequent years, in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
