Instrumentation Technologist

Reporting to the Manager, Operations & Engineering, the Instrumentation Technologist is responsible for providing expertise in the fields of communication, instrumentation, PLC, HMI and SCADA control systems. As part of the Engineering team, works closely with the Operations and Maintenance departments in the development and implementation of PLC and HMI programs for new or existing control systems. The Instrumentation Technologist role requires a strong individual to take ownership of tasks, create solutions, and continually strive for ways to improve the safety and reliability of the pipeline system operation.

 

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

  • Work with the Operations group to develop and enhance the control systems that impact pipeline operations and product deliveries
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting to Operations and Maintenance for issues related to communication, instrumentation and PLC control
  • Recommend and design system equipment changes relating to communication, instrumentation, Process Control and PLC system technology. Produce purchase orders and specifications for new equipment. Ensure that the new equipment meets the design specifications
  • Design, configure, integrate and implement process control solutions using PLC, HMI and SCADA programming
  • Manage Capital and Expense Projects. Obtain bids from contractors, perform field checking and design, develop drawings, commission, test and start-up, and provide training on new installations and equipment
  • Design and prepare PLC, electrical and instrumentation drawings
  • Install, test, calibrate and adjust  electrical and instrumentation equipment
  • Establish and maintain SCPL’s video surveillance system at remote locations
  • Prepare technical standards, manuals, and procedures related to instrumentation and pipeline system control
  • Develop and maintain Wireless and Communication links via Ethernet between Terminals, Stations and Main line Valves
  • Coordinate and maintain a HMI Backup and SCPL Communications backup test yearly to monitor and control the system

 

Education and Experience:

 

  • Technologist diploma or higher
  • Certified Engineering Technologist designation or higher
  • 5+ years of experience in PLC, HMI, SCADA control and Instrumentation & Electrical Design

 

Skills & Knowledge:

 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, dealing with internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong technical computer skills, proficient in MS Office Suite
  • Solid analytical / problem solving skills;
  • Ability to embrace change;
  • Knowledge of pipeline systems and functions;
  • Understanding of Risk-based Management System Principles
  • Working knowledge of applicable CSA Standards, NEB and TSSA pipeline regulations is an asset
